AL-KO Coupling Damper – Suits Early 161S & 161R Couplings

The AL-KO Coupling Damper P/N 353936 is a replacement overrun damper designed for compatible early-model AL-KO 161S and 161R braked trailer couplings.

Located within the overrun coupling assembly, the damper controls the compression and extension of the coupling's sliding mechanism during braking and acceleration. This helps provide smoother, more controlled operation of the trailer's overrun braking system.

This is the older short-style 353936 damper, so it is important to check your existing coupling and damper before ordering.

What Does the Coupling Damper Do?

When the tow vehicle slows, the trailer pushes forward against the coupling.

This movement compresses the overrun mechanism and activates the trailer braking system.

The coupling damper controls this movement, helping prevent the coupling from compressing and extending too rapidly.

A correctly operating damper helps provide smoother braking and reduces harsh movement through the coupling.

Signs of a Worn Coupling Damper

A worn or failed damper may contribute to:

  • Knocking or banging from the coupling
  • Excessive movement through the draw tube
  • Harsh braking
  • Jerky trailer behaviour during acceleration or braking
  • Poorly controlled overrun brake operation

Because other brake and coupling components can cause similar symptoms, the complete braking system should be inspected when diagnosing a coupling problem.

Important Fitment Information

P/N 353936 is the older short-style damper used with compatible early AL-KO 161S and 161R coupling assemblies.

Later versions of the AL-KO 161S use a different damper, so do not order based on the 161S model number alone.

Before ordering, compare:

  • Existing damper part number
  • Coupling model
  • Coupling identification details
  • Overall damper length
  • Mounting arrangement

If your existing damper is marked 353936, this is the correct replacement.

What's Included

  • 1 × Coupling Damper – P/N 353936

Coupling assembly, mounting hardware and other coupling components are not included unless otherwise stated.

Installation Note

The coupling damper forms part of the trailer's braking system.

Correct installation and adjustment of the complete overrun brake system is important for safe trailer operation. If you are unsure about installation, have the coupling inspected and repaired by a suitably qualified trailer repairer.
